This unit deals with the topic of dogs. Initially, this unit looks at the dogs from the personal perspective of the pupils and then moves to the public domain which relates to dogs not just as home pets but as animals that actually help us and other people in our society. Dogs are beneficial to humans; they serve as guide dogs for the blind, work dogs on farms and caregivers for the elderly and children.

Students Activities

Dangerous Animals
Divide the class into ten groups. Each group studies one of the ten dangerous animals in the video clip. They present their findings orally or in a poster.
Endangered Animals
Divide the class into ten groups. Each group studies one of the ten endangered animals in the video clip. They present their findings orally or in a poster.
Vertebrates and Invertebrates
Pupils learn the two main classifications of animals: vertebrates and invertebrates. They also learn additional vocabulary connected to the classification of animals: reptiles, amphibians, mammals, etc.
Facts About Cats
Did you know that every culture has its own word for the sound a cat makes? In English, cats say “Meow,” kitties in Korea say “Nyaong,” and a cat in Turkey will greet you with a “Miyauv!” This video relays interesting facts about these pets, some of which will definitely surprise you! Pupils can discuss the facts in groups.
Animal Kingdom Game
This animal-themed board game builds vocabulary and communication skills. Kids move along the board by describing, comparing, and contrasting animals.
Why Can't Penguins Fly?
A video clip and a lesson plan about penguins, including vocabulary, reading comprehension, and ideas for project work.
Why Do Bees Sting?
A video clip and a lesson plan about bees, including vocabulary, reading comprehension, and ideas for project work.
Panda Web Camera
Groups of pupils can watch real live pandas through a web camera; they can describe what the pandas are doing and then write a report about it. The cameras are from the Smithsonian's National Zoo's Panda Cams.
Lion's Den Camera
Groups of pupils can watch real live lions through a web camera; they can describe what the lions are doing and then write a report about it. The cameras are from the University of North Alabama.
Birds of Paradise
Birds of Paradise Project. Pupils can create their own project by choosing one or more of the 39 species and researching it in English.
The Dinosauria
All you wanted to know about dinosaurs, from the University of California's Museum of Paleontology.
