New Leads in English Instruction: Integrating Distance Learning

July 1st and 2nd 2020

The coronavirus crisis that is plaguing the world has created a new reality for language educators as well, and has required us to experiment with distance learning in various ways and through various means. It should be noted that many teachers already had extensive experience in remote learning, thanks to professional development courses they'd taken before the pandemic hit.

Summer school provides expert teachers with an ideal opportunity to showcase field models that make distance learning feel less remote, and to present the challenges involved. It also offers them a platform to work together to come up with creative solutions to these challenges.

Once again, summer school gives us the chance to capture the wealth of inspirational ideas and insights that reflect English teaching and learning in Israel, which are also relevant during routine times.

Day 1: Wednesday, July 1

Keynote: Corpus for Courses: Turning Your Course Materials into a Corpus

Data-driven learning (DDL), which is about making language input more comprehensible to learners through processing by a computer program, has a strong record of effectiveness (Boulton & Cobb, 2017). But the same principle can also be applied to course design and management in a procedure known as data-driven course design (DDCD).

How this works will be discussed in the context of a reading course based on materials found on the Internet, which can be transformed from low to high learnability with the aid of text analysis software.

  • Prof. Tom Cobb, Professor of applied linguistics, veteran of teaching in a dozen countries, and developer of Lextutor, for ‘data-driven language learning on the Web’

Keynote: Core Practices for English Teaching in Israel: Initial Thoughts

In recent years, a small but growing strand of research has investigated ways of focusing teachers’ professional education on “core” practices of teaching.

What knowledge, skills, and practices are considered "core" in the context of EFL teaching in Israel?

I will examine the concept, basic research, and initial thoughts regarding these issues in light of the recently developed and disseminated document entitled: The Professional Framework for
English Teachers 2020.
