My Idea
Hi everyone I am Sivan Edri- an English Coordinator in Rabin School Dimona and also an English Drama teacher at Amit School, Meitar.
As a teacher I am always thinking what can I do more for my students? How can I teach differently? How can I challenge them to think, to be creative and to dream through English?
So this year I have come up with the idea of BOOK TASTING ACTIVITY. I saw this great idea on the internet one day when I was thinking: How can I encourage my students to read more, but not just to read, but to have fun while reading. Thus, in order to do so, I decided to change the whole school into a huge restaurant. After all, is there a better way to get to the students than through their stomach? And so I did!
The students came to school and saw a big restaurant ahead of them. They were invited to sit in the restaurant, to get menus (in which they had to write about different books, give reviews etc…) and instead of ordering food, they ordered books such as: adventure books, fairytale, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and many more. They loved it!! And they actually read and wanted to read more!! The atmosphere was wonderful and it was a big success.
Since we named it: Book Tasting, they students also got different tastings such as: pop-corn and special cookies. There were also prizes such as: lottery tickets, in which a winning ticket awarded the student with a wonderful prize: an English book to take home for free. Well, after a day like this I can clearly say: this was a wonderful way to encourage my students to read! And they did- indeed!!
